Walking in the Pyrenees
Prats de Mollo is an ancient, very pretty, fortified town built into
the foothills of the Pyrenees. This beautiful Catalan town is 2500ft
above sea level with superb views over the adjoining countryside and
Pyrenees mountains.
It is ideally situated for those interested in hill walking or mountain
walking in the Pyrenees, why:-
• Lots of sunshine and its position close to the Med generally
gives rise to dry warm weather enabling hill walking from March through
to November.
• Its proximity to Perpignan (1 hr), Girona (90 Min's) and Barcelona
(2hrs+) airports give easy access.
• The Tourist Information office in the town sells a book of
24 well signposted local Pyrenees walks. Many of the walks start from
the Town Square and range from simple 1-hour saunters along the river,
to 9-hour mountain walks climbing in excess of 4000ft.
• For the more adventurous, the local OS map shows a much wider
range of footpaths and tracks extending deeper into the Pyrenees.
• Just you and the mountains - no mosquitoes or deerfly at any
time of year. I have walked these mountains on a French bank holiday
and hardly seen another person.
• The altitude range gives a mix of pasture, forest and alpine
walking. Giving different habitats for birds and wildflowers. This is
a very different and beautiful part of France.
• Our house is within the fortified walls of an ancient village,
providing history, scenery, several bars and restaurants (serving local
wines and catalan dishes). There are also all the shops you would require
for those who wish to self cater.
